Fluid Cytology Update

Introduction

Cytological diagnoses of effusions are of great clinical importance. Microscopic evaluation of body fluid cytology is not always straightforward. The first lecture will be a didactic interactive lecture that includes review the literature, describe the cytomorphological criteria in the diagnosis of reactive/ proliferative mesothelial cells; inflammatory/infectious conditions; and benign and malignant neoplastic tumors in body fluid, with emphasis on how to differentiate the many faces and similarities of reactive mesothelial cells and malignant cells. The second lecture is an interactive presentation of selected benign and malignant cases utilizing virtual slide technology (digital slides), with emphasis on diagnostic pitfalls and the utilization of ancillary testing in selected cases.

Objectives

1. Recognize the causes of serous effusions and the adequacy criteria in effusion cytology.
2. Recognize the cytomorphological features of the many faces of reactive mesothelial cells in serous effusion.
3. Learn the criteria of various malignancy that can be encountered in serous effusions and avoiding diagnostic pitfalls.
