This lecture aims to describe how scientific organizations set breakpoints for antimicrobial drugs. We will discuss how they are determined, the data we need, and the different methods used to set breakpoints. We will also, discuss the concepts of pharmacokinetics/pharmacodynamics and dose-dependent breakpoints. We will provide examples of how the concepts of breakpoints can guide therapy for MDR infections.
By the end of this lecture, attendees will be able to:
- Introduce antimicrobial susceptibility categories and how it impacts clinical outcome
- Explain how breakpoints are determined and the different methods used by scientific organizations to set breakpoints
- Identify the basic concepts of pharmacokinetics/pharmacodynamics
- Discuss some examples of how the concepts of breakpoints can guide therapy for MDR infections
