Future Shock, Emerging of Complex Care in Pediatrics

Overview

In 1970, Alvin Toffler described future shock as a destined fate when we are not able to adapt to elemental changes that continuously invade our lives. Our current managerial mind always pursues to create improvement projects which continuously fail to meet our expectations and have difficulties keeping up with not only the rate of change but failed to evolve in the content of change. Coping is largely handicapped by continuous restrictions on our financial capabilities and endless scientific revolutions.
Children with medical complexity are defined as children with significant chronic conditions in two or more body systems, Progressive or life-limiting chronic conditions, and Conditions requiring a dependency on technology. Children with medical complexity (CMC) have medical fragility and intensive care needs that are not easily met by existing health care models. Their demands transcend the healthcare system to impact their families financially, socially, and psychologically. Unfortunately, our current healthcare system fails to adapt to the demand of this demanding population and their families and our current models of care are rigid in their evolution to meet the revolution of these groups.
We aim in this lecture to shed a light on this group and how they evolve over the last few decades and how they affect our current healthcare systems and our healthcare outcome measures.
